On Wednesday, the government swiftly addressed and refuted circulating rumors about potential plans to block certain social media platforms. Heena Waleed, the Spokesperson at the President’s Office, emphatically stated on X that these allegations are entirely unfounded. She clarified that no decisions have been made to block any social media platforms, nor have there been any discussions on the matter.
Heena expressed concern over the spread of misinformation regarding the supposed blocking of specific platforms. She reiterated President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s unwavering commitment to upholding and protecting the constitutional rights and freedoms of Maldivian citizens.
Backing this position, Minister of Homeland, Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, also dismissed the rumors. He assured the public that the government remains committed to safeguarding freedom of expression. “There are claims suggesting we intend to ban platforms like X and TikTok. This is absolutely not on our agenda. Our administration is focused on promoting and encouraging expression through these platforms,” Minister Ihusaan stated.
Since taking office in November 2023, this administration has actively pursued initiatives to build a creative economy. This includes fostering opportunities for artists and creating pathways for them to monetize their creative talents
