State Electric Company (Stelco) has strongly condemned an attempted act of sabotage that caused a brief power outage in Hulhumalé Phase 2 during the early hours of Sunday morning.
According to Stelco, the disruption occurred around 3:30 AM when parts of the network feeder were switched off after individuals attempted to damage a substation in the area. The outage affected several towers in Vinares, Hiyaa, and MPL housing complexes.
Engineers swiftly restored electricity by 4:56 AM, limiting the duration of the blackout to just over an hour. The incident has since been reported to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
Stelco emphasized that such acts are not only disruptive to the community but also potentially life-threatening, urging the public to report any information about perpetrators to the authorities. The company further pledged to continue working with stakeholders to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to our customers and reiterate our commitment to providing uninterrupted service” Stelco said in its statement.
The incident comes at a time when Hulhumalé Phase 2, home to thousands of families, is expanding rapidly with critical infrastructure. Any disruption to its utility services has significant implications for residents and businesses alike.
