Severe Floods in Malé: Police Urge Suspension of Heavy Vehicle Traffic

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 3, 2025

Police have urged the public to refrain from driving heavy vehicles until conditions improve, as severe flooding caused by torrential rain has impacted Male’. The alert highlights that roads are inundated, with reports of water entering several homes. Consequently, authorities have requested that heavy vehicles remain off the streets until the waters subside and normalcy is restored.

Additionally, the police advise against the use of four-wheeled vehicles unless absolutely essential. Continuous heavy rainfall has resulted in widespread flooding across Male’. In response, police and military personnel are actively working to place sandbags at locations where water has breached houses and shops.

Weather alerts have been issued across much of the Maldives due to adverse conditions. A white alert is in place from Ha. Atoll to R. Atoll, while the Met Office has issued a yellow alert for regions from B. Atoll to Th. Atoll, effective until 11:00 PM tonight.
