SME relief begins as President Muizzu directs WAMCO to lower waste collection charges

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 7 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has decided to reduce waste collection fees charged to Small and Medium Enterprises, delivering direct operational cost relief to local businesses as part of his administration’s wider SME empowerment agenda.

In line with the President’s pledge, Waste Management Corporation Limited has resolved to introduce concessions on the waste collection fees currently levied on SMEs. The revised rates will take effect from February 1, 2026.

WAMCO stated that the reduction is aimed at easing financial pressures faced by small and medium enterprises and fostering a more supportive business environment. The corporation is also deliberating the introduction of structured fee bands specifically designed to further lower waste collection charges for SMEs based on business scale and needs.

According to the statement, these fee bands are currently under review and will be finalised following internal assessments. Once approved, full details of the new fee structure will be announced publicly in the coming days.

The decision reinforces President Muizzu’s broader economic strategy, which places SMEs at the centre of national development and job creation. By reducing recurring service costs, the administration seeks to improve business sustainability, stimulate entrepreneurship, and strengthen economic resilience across the Maldives.

WAMCO reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the President’s directive promptly and ensuring that the revised fee framework delivers tangible benefits to the SME community nationwide.
