In a recent interview on PSM News’ Baabu program, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, affirmed that the current government has acted within constitutional boundaries. Highlighting the significant work accomplished during the Majlis’s final session, he emphasized the importance of the constitutional amendment designed to empower citizens.
Abdul Raheem, also the speaker of the Majlis, noted that discussions have predominantly focused on party-switching issues among members. However, he pointed out that crucial elements within the amendment, such as requiring Majlis approval for military operations, aim to enhance public empowerment.
The Speaker underscored that the People’s National Congress (PNC) is committed to upholding constitutional authority and restoring its dignity. He assured that since the establishment of the PNC government and the 20th People’s Majlis, no unconstitutional actions have been undertaken. He dismissed claims of any constitutional violations as baseless and unnecessary provocations by opposition forces.
Contrastingly, Abdul Raheem criticized past administrations led by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for acting unconstitutionally by bypassing necessary Majlis approvals during both their governing terms. While opposition factions mobilize politically under the guise of defending the Constitution, government representatives maintain that recent amendments serve crucial public interests.
