By Hussain Shinan Published March 9, 2026

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has extended the application deadline for its Merit-Based Engineering Scholarship Scheme, giving prospective applicants additional time to apply for fully funded studies in the United Kingdom.

Under the revised timeline, students now have until April 15, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. to submit their applications for the programme, which offers the opportunity to study at the University of Southampton.

Focus on Key Engineering Fields

The scholarship targets students pursuing higher education in two critical disciplines:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering

The initiative is aimed at strengthening the country’s technical expertise by supporting talented Maldivian students to gain international qualifications.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered, applicants must be Maldivian citizens under the age of 24 and meet specific academic requirements based on their chosen field.

For Mechanical Engineering, candidates are required to achieve A AA* at A-level, including at least an A in Mathematics and Physics. Those applying for Electrical and Electronics Engineering must obtain AAA at A-level, including Mathematics and another relevant subject such as Physics, Further Mathematics, Electronics, or Computer Science.

Applicants must also hold an International Baccalaureate (IB) certificate or an equivalent qualification, along with a minimum grade of C (or 4) in GCSE/IGCSE English Language or an equivalent credential.

Application Process

Interested students can submit their applications through STELCO’s official scholarship portal or by accessing the application link provided in the company’s announcement.

Officials say the programme reflects STELCO’s ongoing efforts to invest in local talent and build capacity within the Maldives’ energy sector by providing exposure to internationally recognised academic institutions.
