STELCO: Hulhumalé Power Fully Restored, Malé to Follow Within the Hour

By Ahmed Ashraf Published August 9, 2025

The State Electric Company (STELCO) says electricity has now been restored to the entire Hulhumalé, with most areas of Malé back online following this morning’s blackout.

In an update issued few minutes ago, STELCO confirmed that engineers are in the final stages of energizing and synchronizing the Greater Malé Interconnection Grid to supply electricity to the remaining parts of the capital.

“It is expected that all power restoration work will be completed within approximately 40 minutes, at which point electricity will be supplied to the entire Malé. We apologize for any inconveniences that may occur” the company said.

The outage, which struck around 9:20am, disrupted homes, businesses, and public services across both islands. While the cause was described earlier as a “technical issue” STELCO has not yet provided further details on the fault.

Residents can report ongoing issues via the utility’s hotline (104) or contact centre (1545).
