The State Electric Company (STELCO) has assured residents that electricity will be fully restored across Malé and Hulhumalé before sunset today, following a significant power outage that began around 12:30 p.m.
The outage, attributed to a technical issue within the interconnection grid, disrupted daily life in the capital region. By 1:50 p.m., STELCO had managed to restore power to approximately 53% of the affected areas, including critical infrastructure such as Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital and Dharumavantha Hospital.
In response to the blackout, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu directed relevant authorities to treat the situation with utmost urgency and implement measures to prevent future occurrences. The Maldives Police Service has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the disruption.
The outage also impacted educational institutions, with schools sending students home due to the lack of electricity.
STELCO has previously announced scheduled maintenance and enhancements to the Greater Malé Interconnection Grid, aiming to improve the reliability of the electricity supply in the region.
Residents are advised to stay informed through official STELCO channels for updates on maintenance schedules and potential service interruptions.
