STO Expands to Hulhumalé with Full Range of Essentials and Appliances

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 4 hours ago

The Hulhumalé retail landscape expanded on February 17 with the official opening of a new STO People’s Choice outlet, marking a long awaited entry by State Trading Organization into one of the country’s fastest growing residential hubs.

The new branch was inaugurated during a ceremony attended by Economic Development and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed, underscoring the government’s focus on strengthening supply chains and ensuring price stability ahead of Ramadan.

Filling a Long Standing Gap in Hulhumalé

As Hulhumalé’s population continues to expand, residents have frequently raised concerns over the absence of a dedicated STO outlet in the area. The launch directly addresses that demand, offering households easier access to a full range of grocery and household goods without the need to travel to Malé.

The outlet mirrors the product selection available at STO People’s Choice in Malé, bringing both daily essentials and premium imported brands closer to families in Phase 1 and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Essential Commodities Secured for Ramadan

With Ramadan approaching, the timing of the opening is strategic. The store will stock core staple items such as rice, sugar, and flour, along with 23 additional products recently added to the national essential commodities list. All essential food items will be available for retail purchase, supporting broader efforts to stabilise prices and ensure uninterrupted supply during the peak demand period.

Beyond food staples, the outlet will also retail a variety of internationally recognised brands imported and distributed by STO. Shoppers will find home appliances and electronics from global names including Hitachi, LG, and Philips, reinforcing STO’s dual role as both a food security provider and a major retail distributor.

Future Wholesale Services Planned

While the current focus is on retail operations, STO has indicated plans to introduce wholesale arrangements in the future. This move is expected to benefit businesses operating in Hulhumalé, particularly small retailers and food service providers seeking more efficient procurement channels.

Permanent Addition to Hulhumalé’s Retail Network

Although the outlet was launched in conjunction with Ramadan preparations, STO confirmed that the branch will operate permanently. The store is located at Reethigas Magu, Rain Coral Residence, offering convenient access for residents across Hulhumalé.

For a city rapidly transforming into a commercial and residential extension of the capital, the arrival of STO People’s Choice represents a significant step in strengthening food security, improving retail competition, and enhancing consumer convenience, Shumba.
