Three Decades Strong: STELCO Engine Crosses 200,000-Hour Operational Landmark

By The Standard Published July 12, 2025

A major engineering milestone has been reached in the Maldives, as one of the engines operated under the long-standing partnership between the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) and a global energy service provider has officially surpassed 200,000 operational hours.

The achievement, celebrated as a testament to the durability and efficiency of the engine, underscores more than three decades of uninterrupted collaboration in powering the nation. Since 1990, the partnership has played a pivotal role in supporting the Maldives’ energy infrastructure—fueling reliable electricity generation and driving economic progress across the islands.

The announcement was shared in a public statement highlighting the strength of the relationship and the engine’s critical role in the country’s power supply. “Our engine crossing the 200,000-hour mark is not just a mechanical feat—it’s a symbol of resilience, consistency, and shared commitment to advancing energy access,” the statement read.

Over the years, STELCO has worked closely with international partners to integrate cutting-edge energy solutions and maintain robust operations across its power plants. This particular engine, which has been in operation for over three decades, exemplifies the technical standards and maintenance excellence that have become hallmarks of the utility’s services.

The milestone comes at a time when STELCO and its partners are accelerating efforts towards energy transition, exploring innovative solutions to ensure sustainable and efficient electricity generation for the Maldives. Officials note that such long-term achievements offer both operational insight and confidence in the company’s future capacity-building initiatives.

With electricity demand steadily rising due to urbanisation, tourism growth, and climate adaptation measures, STELCO continues to prioritise system reliability and service longevity—attributes reflected in the endurance of its core infrastructure.
