The Maldives has recorded a strong start to 2026, with tourist arrivals rising by 14.6 percent in the first six days of the year, according to figures released by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.
Statistics show that by 6 January 2026, a total of 43,481 visitors had arrived in the country, translating to an average of 7,247 tourists per day. The highest daily arrivals were recorded on 3 January, when 8,082 tourists entered the Maldives.
Airports across the country handled the bulk of arrivals, with Velana International Airport serving as the primary gateway. VIA processed 42,828 arrivals during the period. Smaller numbers of tourists entered through Maafaru International Airport (200 arrivals), Gan International Airport (165 arrivals), and Hanimaadhoo International Airport (118 arrivals).
Resorts continued to dominate the accommodation sector, hosting 69 percent of all visitors. Guesthouses accounted for 25.7 percent of arrivals, reflecting the continued popularity of local island tourism, while hotels accommodated 3.1 percent of tourists. A further 2.1 percent of visitors stayed aboard safari vessels.
In terms of source markets, Russia remained the leading contributor, accounting for 21 percent of arrivals. Italy followed closely with 16.2 percent, while the United Kingdom made up 6.6 percent of visitors. Germany and the United States accounted for 5.5 percent and 3.4 percent respectively.
The early surge comes on the back of a record-breaking 2025, when the Maldives welcomed approximately 2.25 million tourists. Tourism officials expect the positive momentum to continue throughout 2026, particularly as airlines complete their transition to the new terminal at Velana International Airport. Authorities say the expanded facilities are expected to further enhance capacity and improve the overall travel experience, supporting continued growth in arrivals.
