Velana International Airport has marked a major aviation milestone, celebrating three decades of operations by Austrian Airlines to the Maldives with a vibrant ceremony that highlighted the airline’s long-standing role in the country’s tourism growth.
The anniversary event, hosted at Velana International Airport by Maldives Airports Company Limited, saw hundreds of passengers take part in the celebrations. A total of 324 departing passengers received commemorative gifts, while 328 arriving passengers were welcomed with traditional Maldivian hospitality, including a lively Bodu Beru cultural performance.

The event underscored a 30-year partnership that has remained uninterrupted, reflecting consistent air connectivity between Austria and the Maldives. Aviation officials emphasized that Austrian Airlines has played a key role in strengthening tourist arrivals from Europe, particularly from German-speaking markets, which remain a vital segment for the Maldivian tourism industry.
Over the years, the Vienna–Malé route has evolved into a strategic link, especially during the European winter season when demand for tropical destinations peaks. The airline, part of the Lufthansa Group, has continued to expand capacity in response to growing demand, reinforcing the Maldives’ position as a leading long-haul leisure destination for European travellers.

Beyond tourism, the sustained operations have contributed to deepening bilateral ties between the Maldives and Austria, facilitating cultural exchange, business travel, and broader economic engagement.
The 30-year milestone not only celebrates the airline’s legacy but also signals continued confidence in the Maldives as a premium global destination, with aviation partnerships remaining central to the country’s economic resilience and future growth.
