The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has announced that beginning next year, they will incorporate waste management fees with electricity bills for islands in the atolls. This initiative, which initially commenced in the Male’ region, has been extended to L. Fonadhoo and K. Maafushi.
During PSM News’ Raajje Miadhu program, Mohamed Akram, WAMCO’s Assistant Manager of Sales and Projects, highlighted that merging waste charges with electricity bills will simplify the payment process for consumers.
WAMCO intends to revise its service delivery approach in atoll regions from January next year by combining their billing with local electricity bills. Additionally, WAMCO stated that households will not be charged if they consume less than 34 units of electricity when residents are absent for extended periods.
Ahmed Shafiu, Managing Director of Southern Operations at WAMCO, revealed plans to extend services to more islands by 2025. However, he noted that the initiation of services on new islands currently depends on requests from local councils and considers the level of investment these councils make in collaboration with WAMCO.
Furthermore, Shafiu announced that starting next month, daily waste collection services will be available on islands where WAMCO operates, expanding from previous non-daily collections.
