A social media post by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu confirming his acceptance of the latest local election and referendum results has set the tone for the government’s response, as preliminary outcomes signal major gains for the opposition and a decisive public verdict against electoral reform.
In his statement, Muizzu acknowledged the results of the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections, extending congratulations to winning candidates while assuring citizens that his administration remains committed to addressing areas requiring improvement. He emphasized that the government would continue aligning its policies with the aspirations of the people.
President Muizzu, who leads the People’s National Congress (PNC), faces a shifting political landscape as early counting indicates that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured several high-profile mayoral victories, including in Malé, Addu City, Fuvahmulah, Thinadhoo, and Kulhudhuffushi, alongside additional council seats nationwide.
Meanwhile, the national referendum held alongside the elections has delivered a strong rejection of the proposal to synchronize presidential and parliamentary elections. Preliminary figures show that around 73 percent of more than 12,000 counted votes opposed the move.
The referendum, introduced as part of broader electoral reform efforts, sought to align the timing of presidential and parliamentary elections. However, early results reflect clear public resistance to the proposal.
Despite the outcomes indicated by preliminary counts, Muizzu struck a conciliatory tone, underscoring unity and reaffirming the government’s commitment to continue its development agenda.
Final official results are expected to be confirmed by the Elections Commission upon completion of the nationwide count.
