Members of the Sri Lankan community in Malé City gathered on Friday to express heartfelt appreciation to the Maldives following the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka. The peaceful event was organised to publicly acknowledge the humanitarian support extended by the Maldivian government, private sector, media, and the general public.
The gathering, held near the Public Service Department of Malé City Council, drew a large turnout of Sri Lankan nationals holding banners and messages of gratitude. Many attendees described the Maldives’ response as compassionate, timely, and deeply meaningful during one of Sri Lanka’s most difficult national emergencies.
Speaking to local media, participants said they would “never forget” the immediate relief assistance provided by the Maldives. Several noted that although the Maldives is a small nation, the generosity shown during this crisis was “remarkable” and symbolised strong friendship between the two countries.
Diplomatic Praise for Maldives
Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, Mohamed Rizvi Hassen, also expressed formal thanks on behalf of the Sri Lankan people. He extended his gratitude to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the Government of Maldives, private businesses, NGOs, and the Maldivian public for their collective contribution.
In his remarks, Hassen said the Maldives’ support would be “written in golden letters in history” and emphasised that no challenge could weaken the long-standing relationship between the two nations.
Cyclone Ditwah’s Humanitarian Toll
Cyclone Ditwah caused catastrophic destruction across Sri Lanka, resulting in 355 deaths and 366 individuals recorded missing. More than 200,000 people were displaced following widespread flooding and landslides triggered by the storm.
Maldives’ Assistance Totalled USD 2.4 Million
According to the Maldives’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country contributed a total of USD 2.4 million in relief support. This included a direct government grant of USD 50,000, 25,000 cartons of canned tuna, and additional aid raised through donations from businesses and the public.
A national telethon organised by Maldivian media outlets, including PSM, raised MVR 12.3 million, further boosting relief efforts.
A Gesture Strengthening Regional Solidarity
Organisers said the gathering was a symbolic demonstration of unity and appreciation, reflecting deep cultural ties and longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
