A 21-year-old individual has been taken into custody for allegedly smuggling drugs into the Maldives, concealed within his Boxer briefs and his socks. Mohamed Shafran, hailing from Chandhanee Villa in L. Gan, was apprehended following a search upon his arrival by air. The Criminal Court’s detention order reveals that rubber packets, suspected to contain narcotics, were discovered in both his socks and inside a Boxer briefs.
The substances reportedly meet the criteria for trafficking and are classified as a dangerous type of narcotic. Consequently, Shafran faces charges of importing drugs into the country. The court document indicates that there is ample evidence to suspect his involvement in the crime. Notably, Shafran’s legal representative has refrained from commenting on the accusations at this time.
For community safety and security, the Criminal Court has mandated Shafran’s detention for 15 days. Should he be found guilty, he could potentially face a lengthy imprisonment and substantial fines. This incident follows previous cases where drugs have been smuggled using similar concealment methods.
