President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that freedom of expression in the Maldives cannot be used as a license to defame or violate the dignity of others. Speaking at the official National Day ceremony in H.A. Utheemu, the President emphasized that while infrastructure projects showcase visible progress, the true foundation of national development is built in the minds and character of the people.
The President’s remarks come at a time when Parliament is reviewing a draft bill aimed at regulating the media — a proposal that has drawn opposition from some media outlets and NGOs. Against this backdrop, President Muizzu underscored that responsible speech is essential for protecting national identity and maintaining social harmony.
“Just as each of us has dignity, honor, and respect, others are equally entitled to the same. We do not have the freedom to say or write whatever comes to mind without regard for others” the President declared. He reminded that every right comes with limitations and that words spoken or written carry consequences.
The President stressed that nationalism means more than independence — it means nurturing good habits, preserving the Dhivehi language, and safeguarding Islamic values. “Freedom of expression must exist within boundaries, ensuring harmony, respect, and justice in society” he said.
President Muizzu concluded by urging citizens to uphold the legacy of National Day by strengthening unity, dignity, and respect, so that future generations inherit a nation rooted in values as well as freedom.
