MACL Pushes Ahead with Sports Infrastructure, Launches Finey Center

By Ahmed Ashraf Published August 25, 2025

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has laid the foundation for a new Fitness and Recreation Center in HDh. Finey, marking another milestone in his administration’s nationwide pledge to expand sports and wellness infrastructure across the Maldives.

The ceremony, held yesterday during the President’s official tour of Haa Dhaalu Atoll, was attended by senior government and company officials. Joining President Muizzu in the foundation-laying were Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdullah Rafiu, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, and Finey Council President Adnan Abdullah.

The Finey Fitness and Recreation Center forms part of a landmark agreement signed on August 18, 2025, between the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation and MACL. Under this agreement, MACL is tasked with constructing state-of-the-art Fitness and Recreation Centers in 63 inhabited islands. The initiative is a key component of President Muizzu’s vision to provide equitable access to modern sports facilities across the nation.

In addition to these centers, MACL has also been entrusted with developing Multi-Sports Complexes in AA. Ukulhas and AA. Rasdhoo. These investments are designed to support both community-level sports and the growth of professional athletics.

President Muizzu has pledged to establish Fitness and Recreation Centers on all inhabited islands by the end of 2026 — a commitment his government has emphasized as essential to building healthier, more active communities and empowering Maldivian youth.
