With New Law, Police Declare Zero Tolerance for Gangs and Organized Crime

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 8 hours ago

The Maldives Police Service has begun swift and decisive action under the newly enacted Law on the Prevention of Crimes Committed by Gangs and Other Dangerous Crimes (Law No. 7/2025), which came into effect on August 25.

Police confirmed that preparations are underway to designate organized criminal gangs through the High Court and to submit cases to the Prosecutor General’s Office. Measures will include issuing monitoring and control orders against gang members, protection orders for children, and comprehensive reports on all criminal groups operating in the country.

Police also pledged to investigate cases of illicit wealth among individuals linked to gangs, ensuring illegally obtained assets are seized for the state. Special focus will be given to stopping the recruitment of children and youth into criminal organizations.

At the community level, the Police announced increased patrols in areas frequented by gangs, alongside targeted searches and raids of properties used for criminal activities. Police stressed that these actions are aimed at protecting families, securing neighborhoods, and dismantling the influence of gangs across the Maldives.

The Police expressed gratitude for the strong support from the public and reiterated that cooperation between communities and law enforcement is key to safeguarding national peace and security.
