President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today took the global stage at the “SCO Plus” Meeting in Tianjin, China, reaffirming the Maldives’ role as a resilient and forward-looking nation committed to peace, prosperity, and climate action.
The high-level session, opened by His Excellency President Xi Jinping, highlighted the need for deeper cooperation under the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) framework. President Xi introduced the Global Governance Initiative (GCI), a bold vision to strengthen international collaboration in development and security.
In his address, President Muizzu underscored the Maldives’ longstanding friendship with China and emphasized the country’s “Maldives 2.0” digital transformation agenda as a pathway to sustainable progress. He called for greater inclusion of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in global decision-making, stressing that their unique vulnerabilities demand international recognition and action.
The President also reaffirmed the Maldives’ unwavering support for the Palestinian people, urging the global community to unite in defending their rights and dignity.
The SCO Plus Meeting brings together member states, partner countries, and international organizations to discuss shared challenges ranging from security to economic integration and global governance. President Muizzu’s participation signals the Maldives’ determination to shape international dialogue while safeguarding its national interests and strengthening alliances.
