The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) is holding a public forum tonight at Artificial Beach under the theme “Thoughts and Ideas to Shroud”—a move that once again highlights the remarkable freedom of expression guaranteed under the current administration.
Set to begin at 8:45 PM, the forum will openly discuss the “Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation” bill submitted to Parliament by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Abubakuru. Journalists, youth, and members of the public are invited to share their views and question aspects of the bill, including concerns about how digital platforms are regulated.
The very fact that such an event is being held in a central public space, without restriction, demonstrates the high level of openness embraced by the government. Citizens and journalists are freely voicing concerns, engaging in debate, and conducting public awareness campaigns—clear proof that Maldivians enjoy unprecedented freedom to express opinions in the heart of the nation’s capital.
While the government has clarified that the bill does not provide for blocking social media accounts, it has gone further by proposing 14 amendments to ensure clarity and protect individual rights. These amendments include refining the definition of electronic media and safeguarding online platforms from misinterpretation.
By allowing such forums and respecting public dissent, the government is showing the world that democratic values remain strong in the Maldives. Citizens are not only free to speak, but also encouraged to participate in shaping the nation’s policies. This is the true strength of Maldivian democracy under the present leadership.
