In a message shared on X to mark the International Day of Democracy, the President stressed the importance of inclusive representation, describing it as essential for strengthening the nation’s democratic foundations. He reaffirmed that empowering women and youth is central to his government’s vision for a more just and balanced society.
President Muizzu also extended his solidarity to global struggles for justice, highlighting in particular the plight of the Palestinian people, whose right to recognition and freedom he said remains a priority for the Maldives on the international stage.
The International Day of Democracy, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, is celebrated annually on 15 September. The date commemorates the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s adoption of the Universal Declaration on Democracy in 1997, a landmark commitment to uphold democratic principles worldwide.
As the Maldives observes this global day, President Muizzu’s message reinforces his administration’s pledge to expand democratic participation, ensuring that women and youth are no longer underrepresented in political and administrative spheres. His call serves both as a national commitment and as part of a broader international effort to advance democracy, equality, and justice.
