Dhiraagu has partnered with the Maldives National University (MNU) to host E-Waste Hackathon 2025, a nationwide initiative aimed at tackling one of the country’s fastest-growing environmental challenges — electronic waste.
The hackathon, scheduled from 28 September to 7 October 2025 at MNU, will bring together high school, college, and university students, alongside young innovators and environmental enthusiasts. Participants will collaborate to design practical, scalable solutions to reduce, recycle, and manage e-waste across the Maldives.
Electronic waste — including discarded phones, computers, refrigerators, televisions, and batteries — has become a pressing global concern, with the Maldives increasingly vulnerable due to its limited land area and fragile ecosystem. The event seeks to highlight this issue while empowering Maldivian youth to take the lead in shaping a more sustainable future.
Held under the theme “Innovating for a Circular Economy: Tackling the E-Waste Crisis” the week-long programme will feature expert-led workshops on sustainability, waste management, and innovation, as well as guided mentorship sessions at MNU. Participants will also engage in site visits to recycling centres and waste management facilities before presenting their final solutions to a judging panel.
Dhiraagu, the Maldives’ leading digital and telecom provider, emphasized its commitment to initiatives that combine youth empowerment, digital innovation, and sustainability. The company said the hackathon aligns with its long-term corporate responsibility strategy, focusing on both technology-driven progress and environmental stewardship.
