Velana International Airport (VIA) has announced significant changes to its traffic management system, set to take effect from 00:00 hrs on 25th September 2025. The adjustment is designed to streamline vehicle movements around the airport, particularly with the increasing passenger volumes and the expanded facilities at Terminal 1.
New Access Road for Inbound Traffic
According to Maldives Airports Company Ltd. (MACL), all inbound vehicles must now enter through the newly developed Access Road. This update separates incoming traffic streams and aims to reduce congestion at the roundabout and entrance junctions.
Vehicles arriving to drop off passengers at Terminals 1 and 2 will be required to continue using the Existing Road, ensuring smooth access to the main departure points.
Outbound Routes Reorganized
For outbound traffic, MACL confirmed that all vehicles, including those leaving parking areas, public exits, and main traffic flows, must exit via the roads in front of Terminal 1 – New Road. Meanwhile, vehicles parked in the Western Parking Area must exit using the Existing Road, preventing bottlenecks at the main exit.
Passenger and Operator Impact
The reconfiguration introduces clearer traffic segregation, minimizing crossovers between inbound and outbound lanes. Guesthouse transfers, private hires, and taxis will continue to use the designated pick-up holding area near the Western Parking Zone.
Airport officials emphasized that these changes are part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades aimed at enhancing passenger convenience and operational efficiency as the airport prepares for record levels of air traffic.
Strategic Upgrade for Maldives’ Gateway
Velana International Airport is currently undergoing its most extensive expansion since its inception, with the new Terminal 1 (T1) New Road system forming a crucial component of broader mobility improvements. By aligning entry and exit flows with modern airport standards, VIA seeks to reduce congestion, improve safety, and deliver a smoother experience for both travelers and service providers.
