The Maldives Police Service has confirmed that tonight’s opposition protest, organized by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), turned violent after participants deviated from their approved route and attacked on-duty officers near Majeedhee Magu.
According to the official statement, protesters who had obtained permission to march along Ameenee Magu instead attempted to push through Majeedhee Magu despite repeated warnings from police. Demonstrators responded by throwing stones and water bottles, attempting to seize police equipment, and obstructing law enforcement officers from carrying out their duties.
The Police Service stressed that legal action will be taken against those responsible for these violent acts. Citizens were further advised not to obstruct law enforcement in fulfilling their responsibility to ensure public safety.
Earlier, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan also condemned the unrest in a firm post on X, declaring: “Forcibly taking equipment from an on-duty police officer is not considered a peaceful political activity, as it involves coercive or violent actions that disrupt law enforcement duties.”
With the government reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on violence, the latest clashes underline the administration’s message that mob politics will not be allowed to endanger public security or national stability.
