Minister Zameer: MDP leaders guided protesters to block roads, disrupt lives

By Ahmed Ashraf Published October 4, 2025

Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer has praised the Maldives Police Service for their patience and professionalism in handling last night’s violent and unlawful protest organized by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Malé.

In a statement shared on X, Minister Zameer said the incidents clearly revealed the difficulties faced by the police in maintaining peace and public order, as MDP supporters — acting under the guidance of party leaders — violated designated protest routes, blocked Majeedhee Magu, and caused significant disruption to daily life.

“Although a specific road was designated and permitted for the protest, under the guidance of MDP leaders, participants violated legal instructions, blocked Majeedhee Magu, and caused inconvenience to people’s lives” Minister Zameer wrote.

He lauded the professionalism and restraint shown by the police, highlighting that despite deliberate provocations, officers fulfilled their constitutional duty to protect life, property, and national stability.

Zameer reiterated that peaceful protest is a right under the Constitution, but it must be exercised within the bounds of the law. “The responsibility of law enforcement agencies is to ensure the safety and security of all citizens — and the Maldives Police Service fulfilled this responsibility with integrity” he emphasized.

The Minister’s statement aligns with the government’s broader position that while freedom of expression will always be respected, lawless street politics and attempts to disrupt national peace cannot be tolerated.

By reaffirming his support for law enforcement, Minister Zameer positioned himself among the growing number of senior officials commending the police for their discipline, professionalism, and service to the nation amid deliberate opposition provocations.
