Adh. Dhigurah has officially launched its long-awaited shore protection project in a ceremony attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday, signalling a major step toward protecting the island’s coastline and boosting local tourism.
The ceremony, held on Dhigurah’s beach, was graced by President Muizzu as chief guest. Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib officiated the physical commencement of the works, while Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Managing Director DCP (Retd) Ahmed Saudee and senior MTCC officials joined island leaders and residents.

MTCC confirmed the project involves dredging 27.32 hectares of shoreline to curb erosion and create a stable beachfront for the island’s population of about 724 people. Once complete, officials say the initiative will deliver a safer, wider beach that preserves the natural environment while enhancing Dhigurah’s appeal as a popular local tourism hub.
Valued at MVR 12.86 million, the project is scheduled to be completed within 150 days. Community representatives expressed optimism that the work will not only safeguard homes and infrastructure but also provide a much-needed boost to businesses reliant on beach-based tourism.

President Muizzu described the development as part of his administration’s commitment to tackling long-standing coastal erosion issues across the atolls. Residents of Dhigurah said the effort was long overdue and would help address challenges they have faced for years due to persistent erosion and storm damage.
