Police have arrested a Maldivian teacher accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl in Hulhumalé, in a case that has sparked widespread public concern over the safety of minors under the care of educators.
According to a statement shared with the media, the Maldives Police Service confirmed that the incident was reported late last night, involving a man in a position of trust accused of abusing a child. The suspect, a 46-year-old Maldivian man, was taken into police custody soon after the complaint was filed.
While authorities have not disclosed further details due to the sensitivity of the case, credible sources confirmed that the suspect is a teacher who allegedly committed the abuse while visiting the victim’s home for private tuition.
The Ministry of Education has yet to issue an official comment regarding the incident.
Cases of teachers engaging in sexual misconduct with students have been reported in the Maldives in previous years, prompting calls for stricter background checks, accountability mechanisms, and stronger child protection protocols in schools and tuition settings.
The police have stated that the investigation is ongoing.
