First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has praised the Government’s launch of the Generational Ban on Tobacco, calling it a “powerful investment in the wellbeing of generations to come.” Her statement, shared across social media, framed the initiative as one of the most progressive health reforms in the nation’s history.
Describing the moment as “a proud day for the Maldives,” the First Lady commended the administration for its leadership in safeguarding public health and empowering young people to live tobacco-free lives. “This is a bold, evidence-based step to break the cycle of addiction and prevent diseases. We are securing a healthier, stronger future for our youth,” she wrote.
The First Lady’s message reflects the growing recognition of the Generational Ban as a transformative policy under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership. The new law, which took effect on 1 November 2025, permanently prohibits the sale and use of tobacco products to anyone born on or after 1 January 2007 — a world-leading move toward a tobacco-free generation.
Public health advocates and international organizations have echoed similar sentiments, noting that the policy will dramatically reduce the long-term burden of smoking-related illnesses. The First Lady’s statement has since been widely shared, symbolizing national unity around a cause that protects the health of future Maldivians.
As the Maldives steps into this new era of prevention and wellness, the First Lady’s advocacy reinforces her growing role as a leading voice in health and social development, championing initiatives that prioritize youth, families, and national wellbeing.
