India’s Minister of Civil Aviation and Special Envoy of the Prime Minister, H.E. Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, has described the Hanimaadhoo International Airport expansion as a flagship project under India’s development partnership with the Maldives, symbolising the shared vision of inclusive and sustainable growth between the two nations.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Naidu said the newly built airport terminal, designed in the shape of a manta ray, is an architectural marvel that reflects the Maldivian way of life, culture, and tradition. He expressed confidence that the project would transform Hanimaadhoo into a regional aviation hub, strengthening connectivity between the northern Maldives, India, and the wider world.
The Minister highlighted that the expanded airport, now capable of handling approximately 1.3 million passengers annually, will boost investor confidence, expand tourism—including arrivals from India—and generate economic benefits for the fishing industry and local communities across the northern atolls.

Minister Naidu also noted that he feels a personal connection with the Maldives, hailing from Pikakulam, a coastal village in northern Andhra Pradesh, and described the Hanimaadhoo project as giving “new wings” to the long-standing friendship between the two countries.
He announced that additional development projects will be launched under India’s newly approved USD 565 million line of credit, further deepening bilateral cooperation. Minister Naidu added that flagship projects such as the Greater Malé Connectivity Project are progressing well, with other major ventures like Gan Airport and BIFCO expansion expected to conclude soon.

Reaffirming India’s readiness to support the Maldives’ economic journey, Minister Naidu said both countries are working toward finalising a bilateral free trade agreement and investment treaty to expand trade and investment corridors. He underscored that connectivity is vital for inclusive and equitable development, aligning with India’s guiding philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the belief that “the entire world is one family.”
