PNC PG leader slams opposition as Maldives largest rally backs President Muizzu

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 23 hours ago

A historic political gathering at Malé’s Artificial Beach saw PNC Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Falah deliver a powerful speech defending President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership and sharply criticising the previous administration. The rally, the largest political event ever recorded in the Maldives, drew thousands of citizens from across the country, signalling strong public momentum behind the government’s two year performance.

Speaking to a packed audience that filled the entire coastal stretch from the surf zone to Alimas Carnival, Falah said the people had given a clear answer to the opposition’s claims that the Maldives was facing decline. He said the massive crowd demonstrated that citizens believe no previous government has matched the performance of President Muizzu since his election in 2023.

Falah accused the former MDP administration of disrespecting Maldivians and destabilising state institutions. He highlighted incidents where judges were arrested at night, suspended in large numbers, and stripped of dignity. He accused them of mishandling millions of dollars in foreign aid during vulnerable periods for the nation.

The MP also criticised the MDP government’s handling of COVID era finances, saying the state received unprecedented revenue and grants yet failed to deliver results. He said they passed budgets totaling 200 billion dollars, laid more than three thousand foundation stones ahead of the 2023 election, and allocated millions to projects that ultimately received only small fractions of the promised funds. He described these moves as attempts to deceive the public.

Falah contrasted this with the work of President Muizzu, who he noted has visited 180 inhabited islands in just over a year to directly assess citizens’ concerns. Based on these consultations, the administration formulated a program budget designed to bring lasting structural reform. Falah said this budget model can withstand changes in political leadership and ensures continuity of national development.

He emphasised the scale of completed initiatives, stating that listing them all would take hours. He highlighted new nationwide services including ATM access on every island, ID card issuance in every atoll, and passport services across the country. He criticised the opposition for dismissing such achievements, stating that these services remove burdens that previously required costly travel.

Falah said the current Majlis has passed five thousand bills, compared to forty under the previous administration, and accused the former parliament of blocking beneficial policies.

He concluded by praising President Muizzu’s decision to bar Israeli passport holders from entering the Maldives, calling it an unprecedented act that earned respect across the global Islamic community. He described the decision as a courageous action no previous government dared to take.

As the night continued, the rally’s energy remained high, with thousands awaiting President Muizzu’s own address. The scale of the turnout highlighted significant support for his government’s direction and the reforms underway across the country.
