President Muizzu welcomes Google Dhivaru cable, calls it “a direct contribution to my diversified economy vision”

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 15 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced on social media tonight that Google’s decision to invest in the Maldives marks a decisive moment in the nation’s rise as a regional digital powerhouse. His post highlighted that the landmark Dhivaru subsea cable system, unveiled by Google, reflects strong global confidence in the Maldives and aligns directly with his agenda to build a diversified, inclusive and technology driven economy.

According to Google, the Dhivaru system will link the Maldives with Christmas Island and Oman, expanding high speed digital connectivity across the Indian Ocean. The initiative builds on the Australia Connect program and is designed to enhance reach, reliability and resilience, which Google identifies as essential for the rapid global acceleration of artificial intelligence services.

In his statement, President Muizzu said the investment is a testament to the Maldives stable and transparent investment environment. He stressed that the project strengthens the nation’s strategic position at the crossroads of global connectivity, creating new economic opportunities and preparing the Maldives for deeper participation in the future global economy.

Google confirmed that the project includes two new regional connectivity hubs located in the Maldives and Christmas Island. These hubs will improve network resilience through cable switching, accelerate digital services through content caching and support local businesses through colocation facilities. The company noted that subsea infrastructure is highly energy efficient and that it is exploring ways to align power demand with sustainable energy solutions in smaller island locations.

Ooredoo Maldives CEO Khalid Al Hamadi described the partnership with Google as a major step forward in strengthening national digital infrastructure. He stated that the new hub will open opportunities for sectors such as tourism, enabling smarter operations and greater global reach. Dhiraagu CEO Ismail Rasheed said the collaboration reinforces years of national investment in subsea cables and positions Addu City as a key node in global connectivity networks.

The Dhivaru system is named after the rope that controls the mainsail in traditional Maldivian vessels, symbolising skill, strength and local heritage. With today’s announcement, the Maldives moves closer to becoming a central digital link between Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and Oceania.
