First Phase of Ameenee Magu Repairs Starts Tomorrow

By Hussain Shinan Published 7 hours ago

Repair works on the damaged sections of Ameenee Magu are set to begin on Monday, with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) completing preparations for the first phase of the long-awaited rehabilitation project.

The government awarded the repair project to MTCC on June 15 following extensive damage to sections of the road, where the asphalt surface has peeled away, lifted and deteriorated in several areas. The western side of the road has been among the worst affected, with motorists frequently raising concerns over potholes and uneven road conditions.

MTCC said the first phase of physical work will commence on Monday after completing structural assessments of the affected sections.

To facilitate the construction works, heavy machinery will be moved into the area on Sunday night, requiring the temporary closure of part of Ameenee Magu.

According to MTCC, the section between the Izzudheen Magu junction—in front of the Voice of Maldives building—and the park near Dharumavantha Hospital will be closed to traffic from Sunday night.

Traffic arrangements in the area will change from 12:00 a.m., with vehicles no longer permitted to enter Ameenee Magu from Izzudheen Magu until the works on the first segment are completed.

Police have also advised motorists to remove all vehicles parked within the affected area before midnight to allow construction equipment to be deployed safely.

The damaged sections currently undergoing repairs correspond to Segments 11 and 12, which were originally completed and opened to traffic in September 2023 under the previous administration’s road redevelopment programme.

Although a section near Maafannu Stadium underwent repair work early last year, the road surface deteriorated again within a relatively short period, with potholes and damaged asphalt creating difficulties for daily commuters.

Engineering experts have previously attributed the premature deterioration to the road being reopened to traffic before the asphalt had fully cured, reducing the durability of the pavement and contributing to its rapid wear.

The original Ameenee Magu redevelopment project involved resurfacing approximately 1.79 kilometres of roadway with asphalt at a reported cost of MVR 84.4 million. The project was completed in January 2024.

The latest rehabilitation programme is expected to restore the damaged sections and improve road conditions along one of Malé’s busiest arterial roads, which serves thousands of motorists each day.
