Waste Management Corporation Limited, WAMCO, has received a new fleet of electric waste collection vehicles funded by The Coca Cola Foundation through the UNDP regional project Management of Plastics Waste and Circular Interventions in South, Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The handover event marked a significant milestone in efforts to modernize waste operations across island communities in the Maldives.

According to officials at the ceremony, the electric vehicles will enhance daily collection services, reduce reliance on fuel, and support cleaner and more efficient waste transport across the islands. The upgraded fleet is designed to improve operational reliability in areas where traditional vehicles often face environmental and maintenance challenges.
Representatives from UNDP and The Coca Cola Foundation noted that the regional programme focuses on strengthening plastics management, promoting circular economy solutions, and protecting natural environments in partner countries. For the Maldives, the introduction of electric waste collection vehicles aligns with ongoing national goals to adopt low impact technologies and preserve the country’s natural beauty, which underpins its tourism driven economy.

The broader regional initiative will continue rolling out additional support for sustainable waste management as partner islands advance toward resilient, eco friendly waste systems.
