Fayyaz leaves MDP chair, says move is “to keep the primary fair for every candidate”

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 9 hours ago

MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has resigned from the party’s top leadership post, a move insiders say is aimed at guaranteeing a level playing field for all candidates competing in the opposition party’s 2028 presidential primary.

According to sources familiar with the decision, Fayyaz stepped down “to give an equal and fair chance for all candidates in the MDP 2028 presidential primary”. The veteran politician had earlier declared his own interest in seeking the party’s presidential ticket, making him one of the first senior figures to signal entry into the race.

His resignation removes any perception of institutional advantage as MDP prepares for what is expected to be a highly competitive primary. The chairperson position traditionally plays a key role in shaping campaign guidelines and overseeing organisational neutrality during internal elections.

The MDP is expected to begin its internal transition process shortly, with party officials preparing to announce the procedure for appointing or electing a new chair.

Fayyaz’s formal resignation letter is expected to be published on the MDP website soon.
