In a social media post, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that the dredger TSHD Prins Der Nederlanden has arrived and will commence operations tomorrow at Hulhumalé Phase 3, joining the dredger TSHD Oranji which is currently in operation. The President also recently visited the ongoing reclamation site at Hulhumalé Phase 3 and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to accelerating the project.
During his visit on 10 November 2025, President Muizzu was briefed on the project’s status, including plans to reclaim a total of 63 hectares and the progress achieved to date. He emphasised the urgency of completing the work “swiftly” in order to provide much-needed housing capacity for the Greater Malé region.
Under the plan, Hulhumalé Phase 3 is expected to be completed by end of next month, after which both dredgers will be redeployed to Giraavaru to finish its reclamation in two to three months. Bund wall construction at Giraavaru is set to begin once the Environmental Impact Assessment and related formalities are finalised, as stated in the announcement.
The President’s combined message of arrival of new dredging capacity, on-site inspection, and targeted timelines signals a determined push on the administration’s urban expansion and housing-infrastructure agenda.
