AI Powered eKYC launches at MWC Doha as Ooredoo cuts SIM onboarding to 10 seconds

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 4 hours ago

Ooredoo Maldives has unveiled a next-generation AI-powered eKYC solution at Mobile World Congress in Doha, positioning the company at the forefront of secure digital onboarding and SIM activation in the Maldives. The fully automated system is now live across Ooredoo’s digital SIM activation channels and is designed to deliver rapid, fraud-resistant customer verification in seconds.

The new eKYC platform digitises the entire registration journey, from capturing identity documents to activating a SIM, without any paper forms or manual data entry. Customers simply scan their ID, take a live selfie and confirm details on their phone, after which the system automatically validates and approves the connection in near real time.

According to Ooredoo Maldives, onboarding time has been cut from around 60 seconds to as little as 10 seconds, while more than 90 percent of SIM registrations are now auto-approved by the system. The solution also incorporates advanced fraud controls that can detect fake IDs and digitally altered photos before a SIM is issued.

At the core of the platform is a multi-layered AI verification pipeline. The journey begins with camera-based capture of ID documents and a selfie, followed by optical character recognition to extract and validate key fields. The system then runs sophisticated liveness and anti-spoofing checks, compares the facial image to the ID, cross-checks against backend databases, and triggers instant SIM activation once a predefined confidence threshold is met. All of this happens within a fully digital, paperless process that removes queues and manual form filling for customers.

“As a leading tourist destination, the Maldives must offer more than natural beauty. We must offer world-class digital experiences. Providing fast, reliable connectivity and smart digital solutions to every visitor and every local is crucial to our mission”, said Khalid Al-Hamadi, CEO and Managing Director of Ooredoo Maldives, commenting on the launch.

By automating compliance checks and identity verification, the eKYC rollout is expected to strengthen trust, enhance security, reduce fraud risk, and improve operational efficiency for the operator. It also supports broader government and industry ambitions to accelerate the growth of a secure digital economy in the Maldives, where seamless, remote onboarding is increasingly essential for both residents and tourists.

Ooredoo Maldives says the innovation is part of its wider digital transformation strategy, which focuses on enriching customer experience through AI, automation and cloud-based services. With this latest step, the company aims to help shape what it describes as a truly “Digital Maldives”, where advanced connectivity and smart platforms underpin future growth across sectors.
