Maldives to dispatch USD 50,000 and 25,000 tuna cases to Sri Lanka on President Muizzu’s directive

By Ahmed Ashraf Published November 29, 2025

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has taken swift action to support Sri Lanka during its ongoing severe weather crisis, directing the dispatch of humanitarian relief from the Maldives. The government has approved USD 50,000 in financial assistance along with 25,000 cases of Maldivian canned tuna to help families affected by the worsening floods and storms across the country.

The decision reflects President Muizzu’s commitment to strengthening regional bonds and ensuring the Maldives stands by its closest neighbours in times of hardship. Officials noted that the relief effort was initiated without delay to provide rapid support where it is needed most.

Sri Lanka and the Maldives share decades of close diplomatic, economic and cultural ties, and the Maldivian community has a long history of living, studying and working in Sri Lanka. The President described the assistance as a gesture of friendship that underscores the deep connection between the two nations.

This humanitarian effort marks a significant moment in the Muizzu administration’s foreign policy vision, prioritizing compassion, solidarity and leadership within the Indian Ocean region. More coordinated support and collaboration between the two countries are expected in the coming days as Sri Lanka continues to recover from the severe weather emergency.

The Maldives stands firmly with Sri Lanka, sending a message of unity, resilience and shared purpose during a challenging time for the region.
