VIA Welcomes Centrum Air as 27th Airline to Join Terminal 1

By Hussain Shinan Published 5 hours ago
Officials attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony at VIA’s Terminal 1 to formally launch Centrum Air’s operations at the airport.

Velana International Airport (VIA) marked another milestone in its ongoing transformation with the arrival of Uzbekistan-based private carrier Centrum Air, which officially commenced operations at Terminal 1 on Sunday. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) welcomed the airline with a traditional ceremonial water salute.

Centrum Air’s aircraft is greeted with a traditional water salute on the runway at Velana International Airport to commemorate its first flight to the Maldives.

Centrum Air becomes the 27th airline to operate at VIA, strengthening the airport’s growing network as the country transitions key services to the newly opened terminal.

A Centrum Air passenger receives a welcome rose upon arrival at Velana International Airport’s Terminal 1, marking the airline’s inaugural operation in the Maldives.

In a statement, MACL said the addition of new airlines reflects the company’s commitment to building a fully integrated, world-class aviation hub. The continued expansion of carrier operations at Terminal 1 showcases VIA’s readiness to accommodate rising passenger volumes and enhance connectivity across the region.

The launch of Centrum Air follows the recent inclusion of Malaysia Airlines at Terminal 1—a move MACL described as a significant boost to VIA’s international profile. The presence of one of Asia’s most established carriers improves access to major Asian markets and supports growth in both tourism and trade.

Terminal 1 is a central component of VIA’s broader infrastructural upgrade, designed to handle millions of passengers annually with modern facilities, expanded apron space, and upgraded service capacities. MACL noted that attracting additional airlines is an essential part of positioning VIA as a competitive regional gateway.

With the transition of more carriers underway, VIA’s Terminal 1 is rapidly evolving into a key aviation hub in the Indian Ocean, offering travellers improved connectivity and enhanced airport services.
