The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a weather warning for the southern atolls, forecasting adverse conditions today and tomorrow, including heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong gusty winds that could affect daily activities and marine travel.
According to the Met Office, scattered showers are expected across parts of the southern and central atolls over the next 24 hours. Several islands in the south may experience periods of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, while isolated showers are also likely in some northern atolls.
Forecasters say winds will blow mainly from the north and northeast at speeds of 5 to 15 miles per hour. During squalls, wind gusts could strengthen significantly, reaching up to 35 miles per hour, particularly over open waters.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has advised seafarers to remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions and to take necessary safety precautions. Non essential sea travel is discouraged during periods of rough weather, especially in affected regions.
Residents and maritime operators are urged to monitor official weather updates closely, as conditions may shift quickly over the coming hours.
