Expats found on the streets during late-night hours will be stopped and questioned as President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ordered immediate overnight operations to curb activities deemed harmful to public order and social norms.
In a statement shared on social media, President Muizzu said authorities have observed that certain foreign nationals residing in the Maldives are engaging in late-night activities that undermine community safety and violate widely accepted social standards. As a result, the Maldives Police Service and other relevant agencies have been instructed to begin enforcement measures starting tonight.
Under the directive, law enforcement officers will stop and question foreign nationals found in public places between 12:00 AM and 06:00 AM. Any legal issues identified during these checks will be addressed in accordance with Maldivian law, including immigration and criminal regulations where applicable.
The President’s order signals a firm stance on maintaining public order, particularly during overnight hours, amid rising public concern over safety, discipline, and social conduct in residential areas.
The move forms part of the Muizzu administration’s broader law-and-order agenda, which prioritises community harmony, strict enforcement of existing laws, and ensuring that all residents, including expatriates, respect the rules and values of Maldivian society.
