BML and Maldives Olympic Committee Extend Sports Scholarship Into Third Year

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 8 hours ago

Bank of Maldives has renewed its partnership with the Maldives Olympic Committee to deliver the Sports Scholarship 2025, extending a collaboration that has now entered its third consecutive year.

Launched in 2023, the BML Sports Scholarship is designed to help elite Maldivian athletes reach their full potential through structured, high-performance training opportunities. Under the 2025 programme, athlete selection will once again be administered by the Maldives Olympic Committee, with nominations open exclusively to its member associations, ensuring a merit-based and transparent process.

The fully funded scholarship provides selected athletes with access to internationally recognised high-performance training centres, offering exposure to advanced coaching, modern facilities, and competitive sporting environments not readily available locally. The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on long-term athlete development as Maldives seeks to raise its profile in regional and international sports.

Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Bank of Maldives, , said the scholarship underscores the bank’s sustained commitment to national sports development. He noted that the partnership with the Olympic Committee strengthens the credibility of the selection process while helping identify the country’s most promising and dedicated athletes.

“Investing in athletes today strengthens the future of Maldivian sport and opens doors to international success,” he said, highlighting the importance of structured support beyond short-term sponsorships.

Maldives Olympic Committee President welcomed the continuation of the partnership, describing it as a joint investment in talent and opportunity. He said the programme plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of Maldivian athletes by providing pathways that would otherwise be difficult to access.

Since its inception, the Sports Scholarship has supported eight athletes in advancing their professional development, contributing to broader efforts to strengthen Maldives’ competitive standing across multiple disciplines.

Beyond the scholarship, Bank of Maldives has maintained a strong presence in national sports through long-term partnerships in swimming, tennis, basketball, and surfing, reinforcing its position as one of the country’s most consistent private-sector supporters of athletic development.
