President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that his government is actively working to reduce internet prices and is confident of achieving positive results for citizens as part of broader efforts to enhance affordability and accessibility in the Maldives.
During the “Youth Coffee with President” event held last night, the President was asked about the ongoing challenge of internet affordability. He responded that reducing internet costs is a core policy priority for his administration, especially as the nation advances under the Maldives 2.0 development framework aimed at modernising key sectors and improving public services.
Emphasising the importance of accessible internet services, President Muizzu said that making internet more affordable is essential for national progress and inclusion. “Therefore, we are diligently working on this matter, and we will deliver positive results,” he stated, signalling strong government intent to secure cost reductions that benefit households and businesses alike.
The move comes against the backdrop of past reforms on internet pricing. The most recent significant change to internet prices was introduced in 2021, when the government implemented reductions of about 28 to 30 per cent on residential internet packages, alongside regulations to improve minimum speed standards and overall service value.
President Muizzu’s comments underscore a renewed push to make digital connectivity more affordable and reliable for Maldivians, complementing wider digital economy goals and efforts to enhance the nation’s technological infrastructure.
