The ruling People’s National Congress has officially launched its campaign for the Male’ City mayoral race, inaugurating a dedicated campaign office for its candidate, Moosa Ali Jaleel, a former Chief of Defence Force and Minister of Defence, in a clear show of political momentum ahead of the local council elections.
The campaign office was formally opened during a ceremony held tonight by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, underscoring the party leadership’s full backing for Moosa Ali Jaleel’s bid to lead the capital city.

PNC has now finalized its slate of candidates nationwide and is intensifying grassroots mobilisation efforts as it seeks a decisive victory in the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections. Party officials describe the Male’ mayoral contest as a key battleground, with governance experience and national leadership credentials placed at the centre of the campaign message.
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party is contesting the race with incumbent mayor Adam Azim, who is seeking re election. The contest is expected to draw heightened public attention, given Male’s central role in national administration and urban policy.
According to the Elections Commission, a total of 294,937 voters are eligible to participate in this year’s polls. The preliminary voters’ list released by the Commission shows 150,410 men and 144,527 women registered to vote, with the complaints period currently open.
The Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections are scheduled for April 4, setting the stage for a closely watched political contest that will shape local governance across the Maldives, with Male’ firmly in the national spotlight.
