President Muizzu Calls Education a Sacred Religious and National Duty as Schools Reopen

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 4 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared that both seeking knowledge and providing education are profound religious and national responsibilities, as schools across the Maldives reopened today for the new academic year.

In a message shared on social media to mark the occasion, the President highlighted that the academic year has commenced in 218 schools nationwide, with over 77,000 students returning to classrooms. He stressed that education remains the cornerstone of national progress and moral strength.

President Muizzu underscored that building a generation of upright, disciplined, and hardworking citizens who love Islam and their country is only achievable by prioritising education alongside strong moral upbringing, or tarbiya. He noted that the responsibility of shaping such a generation rests not only on institutions, but on the collective commitment of educators, parents, and the wider community.

As schools reopened, the President conveyed his best wishes to education administrators, teachers, parents, and students, expressing hope for a productive and successful academic year. He emphasised that the prosperous future envisioned by Maldivians can only be realised through sincerity, cooperation, and a shared sense of duty in strengthening education.

The President also offered prayers for the success of ongoing efforts to improve the education system, seeking divine guidance to nurture intelligent, virtuous, and well-mannered children within the nation’s schools.

This academic year marks the return of the school calendar to a January start, reversing changes introduced under the previous administration when the academic year began mid-year. President Muizzu reinstated the January commencement following consultations with parents, education professionals, and the public, ensuring that long school holidays once again fall in December, a move widely welcomed by families and educators alike.
