Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated India’s commitment to continuing joint initiatives with the Maldives, describing bilateral efforts as mutually beneficial to the people of both countries.
The remarks were made in response to a congratulatory message sent by President Mohamed Muizzu on the occasion of India’s 77th Republic Day, marked earlier this week. In an exchange that drew attention for its symbolism, President Muizzu conveyed his greetings in English, while Prime Minister Modi replied in Dhivehi, acknowledging the message and extending his wishes to the Maldivian people.
In his response, Prime Minister Modi thanked President Muizzu for the warm greetings and said India would continue working together with the Maldives in areas that bring shared benefits. He also expressed hopes for a happy and prosperous future for the people of the Maldives.
President Muizzu’s message congratulated the Government and people of India on the national occasion, reflecting the longstanding diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The Maldives and India established diplomatic relations on 1 November 1965, and their relationship has since been marked by close cooperation and friendship. Over the decades, bilateral engagement has expanded across multiple sectors, underpinned by shared regional interests and people-to-people links.
Officials from both sides have repeatedly emphasised the importance of maintaining constructive dialogue and cooperation, as the two countries continue to work together on initiatives aimed at mutual development and regional stability.
