President Muizzu Meets Sinamalé and Malé Hiyaa Residents, Announces MVR 100,000 Allowance and Rent Penalty Waivers

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 14 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met residents of the Sinamalé Flats 1–4 and Malé Hiyaa Flats 1–2 at Mulee’aage, the Official Residence of the President, this evening to listen to their concerns and outline government support measures.

Residents detailed ongoing living difficulties, structural deterioration of buildings, unpaid rent, and accumulating penalties on outstanding amounts owed on their flats.

In response, President Muizzu pledged a special allowance of MVR 100,000 per household for families in the affected flats to offset financial burdens linked to years of unresolved maintenance issues. All penalties on outstanding rent will be waived, reflecting the administration’s decision to ease financial strain on those tenants.

Under the new arrangement:

  • If a household’s total outstanding amount exceeds MVR 100,000, the payable is capped at MVR 100,000.
  • If the outstanding balance is less than MVR 100,000, the amount will be fully waived, and any remaining value will be deposited into the resident’s bank account.
  • Residents who have already paid in full will receive the full MVR 100,000 directly into their accounts.

The President’s announcement aims to address long-standing complaints about the quality of the flats and financial pressures on tenants.
