The Government of Maldives has strongly condemned the escalating violence in the Middle East, criticizing military strikes carried out by Israel and the United States against Iran while also denouncing Iran’s attacks targeting several Gulf countries.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Maldivian government “strongly condemns the attacks by Iran against Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and other brotherly countries,” expressing particular concern over strikes affecting civilian infrastructure.
According to the statement, incidents impacting airports and oil facilities in the Gulf region represent a clear violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions. The government also noted with concern that these attacks against Gulf states were carried out despite the absence of retaliation from those countries.
Maldives further expressed deep concern over the broader escalation following military attacks initiated by Israel and the United States against Iran. The statement condemned several strikes that reportedly caused heavy civilian casualties and extensive damage, including an attack on a girls’ school that resulted in more than one hundred deaths, as well as strikes targeting hospitals and oil facilities.
The government warned that the escalating hostilities are heightening tensions across the Gulf region and undermining prospects for stability and peace.
Calling for restraint, Maldives urged all parties involved to immediately cease hostilities and prioritize diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has consistently emphasized the importance of dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts, advocating for global peace and stability. Reflecting this stance, the Maldivian government reiterated its call for the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring peace, security and stability in the Middle East.
