Three-Day Eid Haveeru Celebrations Kick Off with Strong Turnout

By Hussain Shinan Published March 20, 2026

Large crowds gathered across the Greater Malé area on Eid day as this year’s “Eid Haveeru 1447” celebrations kicked off, with families and children turning out in significant numbers to take part in the festive activities.

The multi-day event, organised by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) in collaboration with 12 partners including state-owned enterprises and government institutions, is being held across Malé, Hulhumalé (both phases), and Vilimalé.

Running for three days starting from Eid day, the event features a wide range of activities designed to appeal to all age groups. Organisers have set up interactive stalls and games, many of which have proven especially popular among children, contributing to the lively atmosphere seen across the venues.

Alongside modern entertainment, the celebrations also include elements of traditional Maldivian culture. Several stalls showcase heritage games once played by earlier generations, offering a nostalgic experience, while others incorporate modern themes and characters to attract younger audiences.

Security services have played a prominent role in the event, with the Maldives Police Service and MNDF displaying uniforms, operational equipment, and a variety of land and sea vehicles. Families have been given the opportunity to interact with the exhibits and take photographs, adding an educational and engaging dimension to the festivities.

The strong turnout — particularly among children and youth — has highlighted growing public interest in large-scale community events during Eid. Many attendees were seen moving between activity zones, participating in games, and exploring the various displays set up by participating organisations.

This year’s celebrations are being held across multiple key locations, including Republic Square in Malé, Hiyaa Park and Central Park in Hulhumalé, and, for the first time, the Vilimalé Turf Ground. Activities in Malé extend across several surrounding areas, including the Islamic Center front area, Sultan Park, the Izzudheen Jetty, and nearby harbour spaces.

Events are scheduled daily from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. throughout the three-day celebration period, with organisers expecting continued high turnout in the coming days.
