President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that recipients of land plots under the ‘Binveriyaa’ housing scheme will be given the option to exchange their plots for government-developed housing flats, following growing public demand for more practical housing solutions.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, President Muizzu said the decision was made after numerous requests from citizens who prefer ready-to-occupy apartments over land plots that require time and resources to develop.
The President noted that while land ownership offers long-term value, many beneficiaries have raised concerns over delays in infrastructure development in areas such as Gulhifalhu and Giraavarufalhu, making it difficult to begin construction. In response, the government has formulated a policy allowing eligible recipients to relinquish their plots and apply for flats instead.
“This means those allocated land under housing schemes in the Malé region can surrender their plots and seek flats through a structured process,” President stated.
He clarified that applicants who have already received land will still be eligible but will be assessed based on their existing advantage, ensuring fairness for those who have not yet benefited from housing assistance.
The government is currently working on technical modifications to the housing portal to accommodate the transition. According to the President, these updates are expected to be completed within two weeks, after which applications will open for Binveriya beneficiaries, including those from previous administrations.
The policy forms part of the administration’s broader housing agenda to deliver 12,000 housing units across the Malé region within five years, including 7,700 units allocated for social housing, aimed at addressing one of the country’s most pressing challenges.
